Indy 500 finish? It happened in St. Pete first

The final results of the Indy 500 probably shouldn’t have surprised anyone around here.

After all, they had seen it before.

The 1-2 finish of Juan Pablo Montoya and Will Power, it turns out, was the exact finish the two had in the St. Pete Grand Prix this year.

This time, Montoya started only 15th, and he was last after an unscheduled pit stop . But he cruised to his second Indy title.

Montoya had flirted with winning it again after his initial victory back in 2000, but the checkered flag eluded him.

“I told my guys there’s a hundred ways to throw this away, and there’s only one way of winning,” Montoya said.

The two finished in identical positons in March when they raced here when Montoya won his first St. Pete Race, beating Power, who had won the race in 2014.
